This beautifully painted vintage yali figurine is from Orissa (now Odisha), Eastern India. Yali were mythical Hindu animals who acted as guardians. Toys, puppets, and dolls are an essential part of growing up in Odisha and are often vividly painted in garish colours. The better quality pieces like this are painted onto cloth laminated on wood. 

A similar example can be found in the Kala Bhoomi Odisha Crafts Museum in Bhubaneswar.
